Word Bugbears

Just thought I'd expand my thoughts on this in one of my previous posts into a proper blog.

I hate it when people say "power of attorneys" when they mean "powers of attorney" i.e. more than one document.

I also hate it when people say Specific Ocean instead of Pacific Ocean. I usually try and mention the Atlantic Ocean afterwards if I can.

There is a portaloo company from Workington called Cumbrian Loo's.

So here's a chance for you to tell me all the little things that annoy you.

I can't think of anything- little things like that don't really annoy me. If I woke up to a world where there were no loo's or photo's orange's or apple's then I would know I had travelled into a parallel universe.

I know these things upset some people but I really don't understand it-perhaps you could explain??

Gill, itchy apostrophe disease bugs me chronically - possibly because I spent a fair bit of my life proofreading, therefore things like that make me cringe.

Well I can see that if it is your job to correct things then you would have to do it in that context- but I still don't understand why it makes people so incensed. ok -it's a grammatical mistake made by somebody who's life consists of delivering and emptying toilets but why does it cause such annoyance?? am I missing something?

I think the "power(s) of attorney(s) thing bugs me as I'm a secretary and i know the correct way but a clerk didn't.
